Bernard Looney was appointed CEO of bp in February 2020. He previously ran bp’s Upstream business and has been a member of the company’s executive management team since 2010. In his previous roles, Looney was responsible for bp’s oil and gas exploration, development, and production activities worldwide. He encouraged bp to lead the industry on methane detection methods and drove sustainable emissions reductions of almost 3 million tons of CO2 equivalent in the past two years. Looney also oversaw improvements in both process and personal safety performances, growing production by 20 percent and making significant improvements in both gender and global diversity. He led access into new countries, including Mauritania and Senegal, high‐graded the company’s portfolio with the acquisition of new onshore U.S. assets, and created innovative new business models, such as Aker BP in Norway.
